There's only one place in the world Lacey Evans feels normal- the roller derby track. When she laces up her skates and fastens her helmet, she's powerful and in charge. She knows exactly what to do and what to say. The rules are clear and penalties are enforced for those who don't follow them. But in the read world, she's far from powerful and in charge. She never knows exactly what to do and say. For years, she counted on one person to be exactly who he said he was--her best friend, Wyatt Tanaka. Only she changed the rules on him, without any warning, and now she's the one being punished.

Marine veteran, Wyatt Tanaka, came home to a heroes welcome. But he's hiding a secret, one that could potential destroy his life. He's doing the best he can, trying to cope with the guilt and the pain of the girl he loves pushing him away by doing all the things he'd sworn not too. Women, bars, drugs and drinking are what consume him. With Lacey's new rules, he has nothing to hold on to. Nothing to keep in from feeling dead.

Then one night, he goes too far, gets in too deep, and when the truth comes out... will Lacey keep pushing him away or help save him?

My Review

What happens when you fall in love with your best friend?? Are you able to keep secrets from them???

Wyatt and Lacey are about to go through that experience. They are best friends but are in love with each other. Unfortunately when Wyatt comes back from the military Lacey aka Lawless calls off the relationship leaving Wyatt heartbroken.

There are secrets hidden between them though and neither one of them are willing to open up and share those secrets. It makes me wonder if they were open and honest with each other from the beginning would all the heartache have occurred. Could they have fixed their problems? Not only are there secrets but there are also misunderstandings. If they could just open up and be honest with each other and clear the air they could move past all of it.

“A relationship built on lies is akin to building the most gorgeous house in the world upon sand. It would wash away the minute a hard storm came to pass.”

My heart bled for Wyatt and his struggles he experienced with his issues with returning from War. This is something that military people experience every day. They try to find other coping mechanisms and not all of them are healthy. Some are damaging and life altering. Sometimes you need to seek help. When you do don’t be afraid to ask for it.

“You once told me that asking for help didn’t make me a parasite. I’m telling you now, that admitting the things you’ve done doesn’t make you unworthy of forgiveness.”

I didn’t understand the part with Lacey and her family. I understand that they wanted to be missionaries and all but the part about financial backing and minor children. How do you just leave behind one of your children??

You experience raw passion with Lacey and Wyatt. They truly love each other but feel they don’t deserve the other. They are meant to be best friends and want to be there for each other. There are moments of slip up and then back track. There are back and forth and wishy-washy times. It’s a struggle. But that is what life is…. And so is love.
