Shards of My Heart - Blitz

Blurb

When I took the vows for better or worse, I meant them. Then I started to wonder if there was a limit as to how much worse I was supposed to endure. Am I supposed to stay if worse means that me and my daughter are in danger? What if the worse was because of a mental illness? When is enough simply too much?

This is a different kind of love story. Read Nina’s journals for a tale of hope, strength of spirit, and unconditional love.

Nicole has lived in Charlotte, North Carolina for the past twelve years and now...she lives in secrecy in another state.
Her journey of elf-discovery and recovery has barely begun and she faces it with her head held high, her shoulders back, a smile on her face, and hope in her heart. Every day of her life seems to bring new adventures, some bigger, better, shinier and prettier than others.

For fun, she spends time with those she cares about, cooks, reads, writes, and especially lives to travel. The current travel goal: visit every Margaritaville. Three down! (Eleven to go?)

In May, Nicki started the blog Stories and Swag to promote authors. Several months later, she started Stories and Swag Tours, a blog tour company offering cover reveals, release blitzes, release parties on Facebook, and blog tours. Book Synopsis

Allison O'Malley's plan is to go to grad school so she can get a good job and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She has carefully closed herself off from everything else, including a relationship with Ethan, who she's been in love with for as long as she can remember.

What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison's mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn't trust her father, so why would she believe his stories about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and work with her father if there is even a small chance it could restore her mother's sanity.

EXCERPT

“Allison?” His voice was soft and serious, sounding warning bells in my mind.
“Mm-hmm?” I was afraid to look at him, afraid of the way he said my name, so I kept looking at the sky.
“I want to know why you never date,” he said.
I opened my mouth, but I couldn’t come up with an appropriate answer so I closed it.
“You could have anyone you wanted. Why is it you’re always alone?” I could feel his eyes on me as I stared into the star-studded night.
“Anyone I wanted? That’s a little excessive.”
“Come on, I’m being serious.”
I sighed, trying to think of the right response, one he would understand. “I guess I’m just always busy.”
He chuckled. “Everyone is busy. You have to give me a better reason than that.”
My mouth felt like cotton. Why did I have such a hard time forming coherent sentences when he was looking at me like that? I licked my lips and looked over at him. He stared directly into my eyes, the question still hanging between us.
“I want to take care of my mother. It’s all I want. So, I need to make that happen.” I curled my fingers into fists and pulled my shoulders back, looking back up at the stars. I’d had this conversation countless times with Nicole over the years.
“I know you do,” he said softly. I glanced back at him, surprised he wasn’t telling me that what I wanted was ridiculous. “But...who will take care of you?”
“I will take care of me.” I shook my head sadly. “My whole life everyone has had to take care of me. My grandparents, my aunt and uncle. They all sacrificed so much for me.”
“You act like it’s your fault, but it’s not.”
Now I was back in familiar territory. “My mother was normal before I was born, Ethan. When I came along she began her descent into schizophrenia. You don’t think that’s connected?”
He shifted in his seat. “I just know sometimes things happen, things that can’t be explained. But you still deserve to be happy.”
I glanced over at him before looking down at my hands. I uncurled my fingers. “I am happy. I’m enrolling in grad school, working and saving the money I make at the store. It’s what I want.”
“But what about friends? What about fun?”
“My idea of fun is just different from yours, I guess. I don’t need to be with a lot of people to be happy.” I hoped he would pick up the double entendre of my answer.
Ethan sighed and turned his body to face mine. He reached up and lightly traced a finger down my cheek. A shiver ran through my body. I turned my face away and focused my attention on finishing my ice cream. There were people everywhere. I didn’t want anything that happened between me and Ethan to be the subject of town gossip.
“Thanks for coming tonight,” Ethan said, unaffected. He reached down and picked up my left hand, interlacing his strong fingers with mine. “It seems like I’ve been trying to get you to go out with me forever.”
I stared down at our joined hands, too shocked to move. “Ethan, you’ve never had a lack of dates. I’d even say you’ve had more than your fair share.”
He ducked his head and laughed. “You think I’m a jerk, don’t you?”
I looked at him and smiled. “No. I don’t, actually. What you did today, for my grandparents… that was really great. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. It was no big deal.” He squeezed my hand and jumped down from the tailgate. “I’m going to take you home now, while you still think I’m so great.”

My Today - Review

My Today
My Way Series, Book Two
By: HJ Bellus

Synopsis:

Lacey’s Story…

Covering up pain is easy. It’s keeping
it tucked away that’s hard. I’ve always needed the cover of tattoos to hide the
nasty past that leached its way into me, tainting me beneath my skin. Not the
shiny, trendy tats, but the ugly broken kind, meant to keep the world at bay.
If they weren’t enough, then my piercings, foul mouth and crazy hair usually
did the trick. Life had taught me to never follow the rules, because when you
do, you get burned.

That philosophy served its purpose,
until I met someone who turned my life upside down. Milly, the little hoochie,
stormed into my life and changed everything with her undying faith in me, her
love and her shitty coffee concoctions. I found a family in Milly, and her sexy
farm boy, Cree. She accepted me without hesitation, and never ran from the dark
and dangerous secrets that I harbored. My new family loved me unconditionally,
with their showers of sprinkles and impromptu dance parties.

My life was perfectly imperfect until
Tripp and his crazy-ass ideas of princesses. Our relationship is what most
would describe as fuel meeting fire. We were both hell bent on burning each
other to the ground. Tripp, fresh out of rehab, moved in with Milly and Cree to
try and make a new life for himself. Tripp, the sexy as hell, charismatic
beast, soon became one of my best friends. We shared our love of ice cream and
tattoos as we blazed our own path that could only lead to a beautiful train
wreck. The only question left is, will we set the countryside ablaze with our
hot tempers and foul mouths, or will we paint our own happy ending filled with
all the gushy shit normal people crave?

MY REVIEW

Stars:4 -4.5

This story is about Lacey aka Princess and Tripp aka Beast. They are two totally broken souls that seek out avenues to hide from their past. Lacey relies on sex while Tripp relies on drugs and sex. Bringing these two individuals together can be explosive for the world or life changing for them.

"We are both broken people and not quite sure on how to approach a relationship. I am going to take it as it is. As long as he lets me stay in his arms, I will keep riding the ride."

I really loved this story and the interactions between Lacey and Tripp but also between Lacey and her friends. They were open and honest and brought humor into everyday conversations. They were able to talk about serious stuff but would always find a way to bring it back around to a joke to lighten the air.

*Possible spoiler alert*
This story talks about some serious and raw/dark subjects and I think that HJ Bellus did a phenomenal job talking about those in this story. It's never easy to about rape, abuse, drug use, and inflicting physical harm on yourself. If you let these things take over who you are and control you then you will lose what matter most in life. But, if you find the power to take control of your life and seek help when needed then you will learn to cope.

Tripp and Lacey have a once and a lifetime love. They are meant for each other but the biggest question you will ask yourself while reading is whether they will destroy themselves and never get that chance at their happily ever after. There are so many secrets that will eventually come out that will leave you blown away.

GREAT JOB HJ BELLUS!

Excerpts

Teaser 1:

Unlocking the door and swinging it open, I realized I should have hoped a little harder. Talon stood there looking spunky in dark jeans, a black tee, and motorcycle boots. His hair looked wet from a recent shower, and I wondered if I could blow-dry it for him with my mouth. My traitorous heart leaped, my body tingled, and...what the frig? How'd my underwear get wet already? Wait, had I peed myself? I looked down at the floor. Nope, wasn't wet.

That meant only one thing. “I need to get laid or break out my Gold Finger on maximum speed.”

Deanna burst out laughing, and Talon seemed smug. I looked at them both confused. Oh, hell no. I did not just say that aloud. See! Drinks, Talon, and me. It was a no-go!

Teaser 2:

“I really hate this talkin' shit. I want you as my woman. Long-fuckin'-term. I know we still got a lot’ta shit we need to learn 'bout one another, but that's the best part. For once in my life, I'll try to be patient, for you.”

Teaser 3:

“Kitten, please look at me.”

“Why?”

“So I can tell you how fuckin’ sorry I am. I wish you’d never seen that, ‘cause it will never happen again. And I wish I could take that pained look I saw on your face, those tears that fell from your eyes, and wipe away any hurt you felt.”

Excerpt

Behind me, the door swung shut quietly in its hinges, locking itself after it clicked into the jamb.

"Justin?"

There's no answer. Maybe he's not home yet.

I'm putting my bag down when I hear the voice behind me. "Get up against the wall—NOW! Put your hands out," he demands.

There's no point in resisting. I step up to the foyer wall and nervously place my hands against it, waiting to see what the next move will be. My pulse is a loud whomp in my ears.

The sound of his footfalls fill the small space, approaching on me slowly, deliberately, until I see his feet on the floor between mine, his bare feet and bare legs. Strong hands lift the heavy coat off me and toss it to the floor beside us and then return to my shoulders where they begin to coil up my hair. A familiar hardness presses into the small of my back.

"I've been thinking about you all day," Justin whispers into my ear, making my knees weak.

"And what, exactly, were you thinking about?" I breathe, praying for his magical hands.

His left hand pulls my hair, turning my face toward his. "I thought about making you cry with pleasure. It's the only way I can tolerate your devastating absence." He quickly bites my lower lip, tempting me. "I love you, Warrior. And I need you."

Justin's right hand slithers around to the front of me under the bottom of my shirt, rising up between my breasts to grab my bra like a handle. Then both of his hands pull me tightly against him, molding me into his warm body.

My lips ache for him, my hunger for the taste of his tongue spills over. "Kiss me, please!" I beg. "Touch me like a man should touch a woman."

"I'm going to do everything to you that a man should," he growls.

His mouth finds mine, the pleasure of it searing all of my senses. He tugs my hair a little more and completes the seal between our lips, circling his tongue around mine. Underneath my shirt, his powerful hand lets go of my bra and gently grabs my breast, pressing the fleshiness between his fingers. He lets me hear a low moan deep in his chest. It's more felt against my body than it's heard by my ears.

It doesn't matter that  want more, that my clit is throbbing for his touch, Justin makes me wait for it. He releases my hair and my breast, both hands moving to the bottom of my shirt where he pulls at it uncaringly, ripping it over my head and tossing it on top of my coat. My bra comes off me with the same ease, and he spins me around to face him, pushing my back against the wall.

"My fucking God! I will never get tired of looking at you," his deep voice confesses while his eyes widen with lust.

There's no misunderstanding him. My own eyes were taking in his fully unclothed body with the same excitement and enthusiasm. The thick muscles of his chest rise and fall with his heavy breathing, and his well-defined shoulders beg me to claw my nails into them.

Christ! How does he stay in that shape?

Fuck it—I don't care!

Second Chance Summer - Review

Second Chance Summer

By: Emma Hart

SECOND CHANCE SUMMER BLURB

From the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Love Game and Playing for Keeps is a story of hope and the beauty of getting a second chance at the kind of love that comes once in a lifetime…

“You don’t get a love like ours and get to leave it behind.”

Kia James was never meant to return to her hometown of Harlan Grove, Alabama… But she has.

And Reese Pembleton was definitely not supposed to still be in love with her the way she is him… But he is.

Last summer was the summer to end all summers. It was the summer they both fell in too deep to get out, and try as she might, Kia can’t deny that whatever was there between them a year ago is still there. If she’s honest with herself, there’s so much more there than there ever was, but the way her dad walked out six years ago has shattered her belief of that fairytale love every girl craves.

Reese isn’t giving up so easily. His biggest mistake was not chasing after Kia the way he wanted to when she upped and left him without a word. Despite what she says, he knows her better than anyone, and he knows she still wants him the way he wants her. And this time, nothing will stop him from getting – and keeping – his girl.

But nothing is that easy. When Kia’s dad arrives back in town, family secrets come tumbling out she never realized existed. Everything her mom has ever told her about the reason he left is a lie – but how can she trust the man who, by his own admission, didn’t fight for her as hard as he could have?

With her past and present wants and needs colliding, Kia is thrown into the turmoil of the biggest decisions of her life. And she realizes, sometimes a second chance is all you need.

SECOND CHANCE SUMMER BLOG TOUR EXCERPT

“Shit! Kia!” Reese calls after me. “I didn’t mean it like that!”
I ignore him and keep walking. Step, step, step. Keep going, Kia, don’t stop for him. His hand grabs my arm, and I turn, yanking my arm back as I near where his truck is parked.
“What, Reese? You’ve made it clear last summer was a mistake. You’re right. It was. It was just a whirlwind mess between two people who had no idea what they wanted from life.”
“I didn’t mean it like it came out. I just meant I didn’t want you to hate this place because of me.”
“I don’t hate it because of you.” I look at him and laugh bitterly. Shadows play across his face in the darkness. “I hate this place because of what it means to me.”
“What does it mean, Kia? Tell me.” He loosens his grip on my arm; his thumb gently stroking my skin.
“It means nothing,” I say quietly, stepping back. “Nothing.”
“You’re lying,” Reese steps closer and holds my other arm. “If it meant nothin’, you wouldn’t be running from me.”
“I’m not running from you! Why would I be? One summer, that’s all we had.”
“Is it?” he asks quietly. “One summer? Is that really all we had? Do you think my feelings disappeared the way you did? Do you think they upped and went in the middle of the night just like you?”
“I never said that-”
“‘Cause they damn well didn’t!”
“Rumor has it you’re seein’ someone, or have you forgotten that?” I throw back at him.
“Maybe I don’t care about her. The person I care about is front of me.”
“After eleven months? Why don’t I believe you?”
“Let me show you. Make you believe me.”
I shake my head. “You’re so fucking funny.” I pull myself from his grip and move toward my car, passing his truck.
“Am I?” he growls, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward him. My back hits the door of his truck, and he stops in front of me. He places his hands either side of my head, his face bent into mine. “Am I funny, Kia? Really?”
My heart is pounding furiously at his nearness, and I push at his arm. My blood is thundering through my body, my breathing coming hard and fast. I can feel the warmth emanating from his body. I want more. I need more. I want to feel his body pressed against mine, even if it’s just for a second. I need to feel it.
His hazel eyes collide with mine, and I can see he feels the same. It’s been a year. He still feels it. I still feel it.
“Jokes usually are funny,” I retort, trying to move away from him in an attempt to regain control of my body.
His mouth crashes into mine, his lips molding to mine. One of his hands cups the side of my head, the other resting on my waist. I grab his shirt when he nips my bottom lip. My mouth opens, and his tongue meets mine, stroking it in a gentle caress. Our bodies push together, and I drink him in, kissing him greedily.
Now, I remember. I remember why I can’t fight it. Why I’m powerless. Why, at nineteen, he is all there is.
I open my eyes as our mouths part. His lips are hovering over mine, close enough they could touch mine again, but they don’t. In the small gap between us all,I feel is the chilling night air where, just seconds ago, there was nothing but heat.
“Am I funny now, Kia?” he breathes, still holding my face.
“Yep,” I whisper, my voice slightly shaky. “You’re fucking hilarious.”
Reese’s hand leaves my waist and tugs the door open. “Then you better get in the truck so you can find out exactly how not funny I am.”
“I’m not...”
“Get in,” he growls, his eyes promising me a fight.
“No,” I say, pushing him back. I shake my head. “No.”
“What?”
I walk around him and away from him, walking backward. I shake my head, everything warring inside me. “I… No, Reese. I can’t.”
“Kia?” he calls.
“That…” I take a deep breath and stop at my car. “That shouldn’t have happened.”

My Review:

Stars: 4.5

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a second chance at love? No more regrets of the past but just being able to be with that one person again?? Sit back and experience that with Kia and Reese in Second Chance Summer!

I fell in love with Reese. I thought he was so open and honest with his emotions that it blew me away. He knew exactly what he wanted and although he didn’t go right after it when it (she) left he gets a second chance. He knows that anger will only push her further away so he takes a different approach and shows her how they are meant to be together. The words that he spoke melted my heart and I wish that a guy would say those things to me.

One of my favorite quotes:

“Tonight isn’t about any of that- it’s about me holding you so tightly you’ll wake up tomorrow morning believing I’m never gonna let go.”

Kia has issues with her parents and their separation. Her mom’s an alcoholic that can’t get over the fact her husband left in the middle of the night. Unfortunately there are tangles of lies weaved into the mix that will be brought out that could have changed circumstances in the past. Had Kia known the true reason behind her father leaving maybe, just maybe, she wouldn’t be so hesitant with Reese. I did become frustrated with her at times because they are meant to be together but she keeps him at an arm’s length to help protect her. Her fear is becoming just like her mom.

I’m a little torn with the ending…. Of course there is another novel coming but it leaves it wide open knowing they want to be together but will it happen soon? Who knows what the future will hold for both Kia and Reese but with a love as powerful as theirs I hope that they end up finding their happily ever after together.
