Ellie Parker is a master at building walls around her heart. In the twenty-five years she’s been alive, Dex Remington has been the only person who has always believed in her and been there for her. But four years earlier she came to Dex seeking comfort, and then disappeared like a thief in the night, leaving him a broken man.

My Review

This is the story of Dex and Ellie who have a very complicated relationship. Ellie is a runner… when things get tough or difficult for her to deal with her first instinct is to run. Unfortunately for Dex, one of the things that Ellie has ran from in the past is him.

“She’d stolen his heart as a teenager, but until she’d shown up four years ago, he hadn’t realized how much he’d still loved her. In one brief weekend she’d filled his heart so full he thought he’d died and gone to heaven, and just as quickly as she’d reignited his love, she’d shattered his heart and left him a broken man.”

Dex loves Ellie and has thought about her daily over the years since she took off. He has built a wall around his heart to keep from feeling that type of pain again. I felt bad for Dex because you could truly feel how much love he carried for Ellie and how heartbroken he was over her. You just wanted to comfort him and help him pick up the broken pieces that were left scattered on the floor.

Ellie finds herself once again needing to seek the help/comfort of Dex like she has in the past. You find yourself rooting for them to find their happiness with each other and for Dex to finally be able to break through Ellie’s walls. Ellie has an insecurity that at times makes you want to pull your hair out but then when she finally realizes that she truly does love Dex and starts to open up you see yourself cheering her on!

I really did enjoy this book… it’s told from both Ellie and Dex’s POV. It’s a quick read and a sweet love story that will have you routing for the couple that should have had the chance years ago.
